Shooter Detection Systems

The latest workplace shooting (as I write this) took place in Virginia Beach May 31st. Twelve were killed and several more wounded.  Authorities have yet to determine a motive for this latest tragedy. How do you prevent something when you don’t know what caused it? We don’t pretend to have the answers but we do know a few things that can help.
  • Training – When employees have given some thought to the possibility and are given some direction about what they can do & how authorities will respond, they are less apt to panic and “freeze” and more likely to take appropriate action.
  • Target hardening – Strategically placed access control devices, safe rooms or areas and shatter resistant glass are examples of how protection can be built in to most facilities.
  • Shooter Detection Systems – Homeland Security teaches “RUN – HIDE – FIGHT” but you need to know you aren’t running towards the shooter. Detection systems identify the shooter’s location and notify everyone on the system, including police.
